The Unwelcome Beast of Depression (You’re Not Alone)

Chief of the least

A few months ago, I wrote about an elephant dwelling in the back of our church sanctuaries. That post was about the prevalence of “porn” in the American church, and it included a short lament regarding our tendency to keep it a dirty little secret rather than shedding the gospel light on it. I called porn an elephant because when an elephant is in any room it must be acknowledged. Yet so many church leaders have taken the ridiculous stance of acting like the “porn elephant” is not seated among their own congregations, when statistics clearly show it is.

The porn elephant is not the only unwelcome beast in our midst that no one is talking about. Apparently, we have given a second elephant residence in our congregations while applying similar silent treatment towards it. This elephant’s name is “Depression.” While no one is really talking about it almost…

  1. My pastor taught an incredible Bible study on this topic – the perils of hidden sin and the ministry. It even includes a picture of him demonstrating his point. I am taking the liberty of including the link here if you care to read it.

  2. Had a young Japanese believer told me once the reason he got hooked on porn was once in a prayer line a pastor laid hands on him; since that time he said he started going to the convenience stores and reading porn So the fault was the pastors whom he said; “must have had a spirit of porn.” Sadly enough many in the little charismatic church where he was worship leader bought into his reasoning for his porn addiction. when I took him to James 1:14-15 he was a little unhappy with me. I don’t think he received it very well.
“But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. Then when lust has conceived it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished it brings forth death.”

  3. “Oh my soul why art thou downcast” A King of a nation once asked. David had some expensive weaknesses and knew the state of his soul before the Lord. He eventually turned but look how he hearkened to the joy many days prior when entering the temple to worship God. We cause depression through faithlessness and I believe we can cause the Lord to be depressed as a result. But as the proverb c12 v25 says a good word brings healing. I see our debt to God in Christ that though His forbearance brings us healing we are better to avoid sin and acknowledge weakness immediately and run. I do not want to take advantage of Him and flaunt my liberty, I always end up drinking the piss. The long term fruits of your relationship with The Father will entail far less depression on both sides as a result.

  4. That’s similar to a situation in our church where we have had to deal with an issue of people joining our worship team that were a couple but not married, in a sexual relationship and/or also living together out of marriage. A few year ago I was just a band member, But have been leading the band now for about 2 1/2 years now. And for the first time I have had to deal with the same situation, with help from the leadership team (Pastor/Elders etc) above me. This could have been the elephant in the room, because our church is called “Grace Church” and that is our heart, to have grace for people. You know, we could have said “Our church name is Grace church, we need to give these certain people grace, we love people and understand their situation”. But I’m glad that the leadership have a spiritual backbone to deal with this sort of thing. And all this was done in love, and we still love and care for this couple, but elephants like this need to be dealt with, especially when it comes to a worship band at church. Well any way sorry for the long rant. Really appreciate your posts.

  5. They were preaching about this last week in church. It is all about control over your thoughts. When Jesus was tempted in the desert he used scripture against Satan. In the same way we are to rebuke thoughts with scripture also.

A great scripture to use is below……..

James 4:7…….Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Each thought is a seed planted, be good or bad. If we start to plant good seed in out minds ( Gods word ), then good thoughts will come to us, closing the door to sinful ones.

The next time anyone is tempted by any kind of sin, then start quoting scripture and believe in what you are saying. Also, if we sing praise to God, the demonic influences hate it, and they flee. 🙂

  6. The subject of porn should be preached about. Unfortunately there is probably more than one elephant in the room. I hate to think it is true but I heard a pastor say that a survey was taken and half of christian men and 30% of christian women are in to porn. Don’t know the validity of this but one thing is sure the devil is at work in our culture today and he is out to destroy the church any way he can.
