An oldie but goodie from last year…hope you enjoy, and happy SuperBowl Sunday!

Chief of the least

I came across this video last year before the Colts and Saints played in the Superbowl. It’s just awesome(ly bad). And it is not a joke; intentionally anyways. It seems the creators of this song are sincere in their attempt to point out the idolatry of football in many men’s lives. I hear that it may have even been sung at a church or thrice during Superbowl Sunday last year.

I tend to agree with the sentiment that football is an idol in American life, especially considering that college football is my drug of choice. But I have some serious reservations with this attempt at a rebuke. Though I know it wasn’t their intent, it’s hard to consistently draw comparisons with Peyton Manning and Jesus without beginning to sound superfluous and even a bit irreverent. Pairing Jesus up with a wide scope of forced football analogies in song doesn’t seem to qualify for Sunday morning…

  1. I am glad some Christians are dealing with this touchy subject. If people had half of the enthusiasm about God that they have for football in this country, we’d have the revival we’ve been longing for. Who knows?- it might be one of things preventing a revival.

    1. Good thoughts OTwist. I’m certain the pomp and extravagance of the SB weekend says something about our priorities as a culture. The glory of God in the gospel has no affect on the average soul, but a grown men and tights who play around with a ball thrills the average consumer (and I write this as a HS fb coach!)

    2. Revival!? Do you know what season you are living in or really even know who you are talking about? These are the last days, there will be no revival only in the regeneration of the minds of Gods children who are lessening by the hour. Hear this dullards, you are in the throng of a technological take over of society peoples minds are being conditioned to let Satan rule thier lives. You are being tracked like pitbulls in England where which they are chipped and recorded and they have been for years. The mark of the beast is not on its way, its here! People will be getting chipped very, very soon and some are already, whether you are rich or poor it does not matter. The Chinese army are now 200 thousand thousand strong just as the book of revelation said they would be and soon all of the armys will come together to fight the Lord and His bride. Revival…I would not hold your breath..are you just afraid of being seemingly in the minority…are you just really unbelieving and faithless underneath as to the truth? God is going to wipe the earth out! WICKEDNESS is flourishing, abounding in number as to the practioners thereof but SO WHAT! Do you not think that the creator of all living creatures who cannot lie is incapable of sticking to His own plan? Dont even ask me when the Lord is returning, I dont know but what I do know is that I just hope He will be pleased with what He finds with me when He turns up. Let me tell you if you are hanging on to some vien hope of a massive turnaround, drop it, Satan has got your eyes all misty with sentimental codswallop. The only thing you should be longing for as a genuine Christian is the Lords return and to see Him reak havoc on his enemies. Dont hang on for the worlds conversion get on with living the faith out. Feeling sorry for the world only brings death, it will wear you down. Stop whining on about how good it would be if the world was less fond of football. Your completely wasting your time and Gods if your for Him. No child of God should ever compare Jesus to nothing but only ever see Him as a perfect reflection of God the Father. Wake up, sharpen and shine! God does not care for evil that one of the reasons why he created it. Cheers.

  2. Great post. Its sad to see that people tend to now worship football and they are even unaware that they are on their knees for it.

  3. Mr. Iddison is quite passionate. I find it ironic that he whips out the statistics like a good alarmist pre-trib Campingite and then denies knowing when the Lord will come. Come on man! All that data and you can’t figure out even the month or day? I’m not even asking for the hour…just maybe a week’s proximity.

He said: “People will be getting chipped very, very soon and some are already, whether you are rich or poor it does not matter. The Chinese army are now 200 thousand thousand strong just as the book of revelation said they would be and soon all of the armys will come together to fight the Lord and His bride.”

All the first and second century Christians were thinking the same thing, you know, with pagan Rome ruling most of the world.

Then he said: “Your completely wasting your time and Gods if your for Him. No child of God should ever compare Jesus to nothing but only ever see Him as a perfect reflection of God the Father.”

Not even a lamb? Or a lion, perhaps?

He also said: “God does not care for evil that one of the reasons why he created it.”

    Say what?(!)

  4. Bryan, thanks for visiting my blog and for “liking” the most recent post there. My wife is the sports fan in our family, so it’s easy for me to critique the sports madness that periodically descends on our country, since it’s one particular vice I don’t have. Of course, Europe has its equivalent imbalance in its obsession with soccer/futbol. Jesus may well be “better” than the Superbowl, but until people realize that what they seek is found in him, it’s possible to become very “weary in well-doing” because of our human weakness. So much human suffering and loss. Still, people keep finding salvation, even in these end times. And you’re exactly right: just as it’s always the end times, now is always the accepted time and the day of salvation. I’m not a Christian, except in the most liberal and heretical sense, but Christ embodies the Holy Wisdom I also find in so many other sources around the world. It just takes prayerful reflection to sift and claim the golden teachings. Blessings on you and you blog.

    1. Thanks for the comment adway. Yeah, American sports fanaticism pales in comparison to that of the European soccer crazies. Of course in the states we find equally stupid things to kill ourselves over.

I’m assuming you mean you’re a “Christian” in the Unitarian/Universalist sense?
